Description

Antique mawata hand woven natural indigo dyed tsumugi silk w/ sayagata

Gorgeous rare hand woven mawata tsumugi silk, in a gorgeous two toned natural indigo dyed woven sayagata pattern. It is really unusual to find this sort of hand woven fabric any more, and it is the first chance i have had to find any at a price that was not astronomical.

Mawata silk is hand spun from the mawata or hanky of raw silk, a laborious and slow process unlike mechanical silk processing normally used today. The individual silkworm cocoons are gently pulled apart and dried into the mawata hanky, then spun into the classic slightly bumpy tsumugi thread. In this case, the threads are then tied off to form the pattern, and dyed BEFORE being woven, in natural indigo dye, which needs repeated dipping and drying to get the deeper tones. Then the threads are assembled and woven to create the beautiful soft sayagata pattern

This has an absolutely wonderful feel to it, smooth but firm, with a subtle soft texture. Really a weaver’s masterpiece.

This fabric is 36.5 cm wide and is sold by the running meter. When it’s gone, it’s gone!

• Sayagata:  the swastika is often found as part of a repeating pattern. One common pattern, called sayagata in Japanese, is made of of interlocking manji/swastikas, left- and right-facing swastikas joined by lines. As the negative space between the lines has a distinctive shape, the sayagata pattern is sometimes called the “key fret” motif in English.

Tsumugi: A silk textile woven with hand-spun threads from wild silk cocoon fibres. It doesn’t have a glossy or smooth texture, but a tasteful rough texture. Very time consuming to produce, as the silk fibre has to be joined repeatedly, due to the hole in the cocoon where the silk moth exited, so a very expensive silk. (Also see hige-tsumugi)
