Description

Reclaimed wool fabric from antique kimono with woven sayagata

Wonderful wool fabric with a woven sayagata pattern in red and black, and loads of character.

This fabric has 2% nylon to make it wear extremely well yet it has all of the character and durability of wool. It is a stiff fabric as it has not yet been worn (it came from an antique unused kimono) and would be perfect for cushions or bags or anything demanding a suitably durable material.

The threads of this particular fabric were dyed before being woven, giving the pattern a characteristic softness and blur that is really charming.

The pieces measure as follows:

  • 4 pieces @ 67 cm x 37 cm
  • 2 pieces @ 67 cm x 20 cm

In unused excellent antique condition.

• Sayagata:  the swastika is often found as part of a repeating pattern. One common pattern, called sayagata in Japanese, is made of of interlocking manji/swastikas, left- and right-facing swastikas joined by lines. As the negative space between the lines has a distinctive shape, the sayagata pattern is sometimes called the “key fret” motif in English.
